How does nano-ceramic insulation work?

PScoat contains ceramic vacuum nanospheres: tiny spheres with a vacuum core below 70 nanometres, surrounded by a ceramic shell. About 14,000 of these spheres fit into 1 millimetre of layer thickness.

The idea behind it: heat travels by conduction, radiation and gas movement. In the vacuum core there are hardly any gas molecules to pass heat on, and the layer reflects thermal radiation. In winter, heating warmth stays in the room; in summer, less solar heat reaches the wall.

What has been measured:

  • Test rigPScoat reduced energy demand more than 100 mm of polystyrene insulation.
  • U-value on a wall as actually built0.14 W/(m²K) (Testo 635-2, measurement report).
  • Block of flats from 1960 with a 1 mm build-upU-value 2.63 → 0.096 W/(m²K), confirmed by FLIR thermal image.

The layer is applied like a coating and dries to a protective layer about 1 mm thick. Boards, dowels and connection details are not needed.
